My fishing pal Michael and I spent 5 days touring through Wisconsin fishing and dining. We fished the Bruce, Flambeau, Prairie and Menomone Rivers with the help of guides Adam Greul, Keith Behne and Shane Suter. And we visited several classic supper clubs: The Five O’Clock Steakhouse, The Duck Inn, Lehman’s Supper Club, The Fireside Supper Club, and Marty’s Place.
In January 2023 I found a book in my favorite book store on Main Street in Sag Harbor, Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club by Ryan Stradel. A simple reminder of how much I love a good supper club. Stradel shares a story of a family evolution, successes and challenges through the lens of a Minnesota Supper Club’s front door.
The book inspired me to look at my own history. The supper club that I knew as a kid visiting my grandparents in Southern Wisconsin was my grandma CeeCee’s favorite, it was called The Duck Inn. In the 1960’s The Duck Inn featured a large fireplace in the center of its dining room, a relish tray on every table, a variety of taxidermy (think ducks) on the walls..
